ABOUT UNSPOKEN NARRATIVES

A woman in Nanjing has kept a promise every morning since 1989, through the performance of Baiju. In Hong Kong, migrant domestic workers raise other families' children while watching their own grow up from across the sea. Before dawn in Washington, D.C., election workers quietly prepare the machinery of democracy.

If no one records their stories, few will ever see them. They are compressed into categories, reports, and official language: invisible.

Unspoken Narratives is the inaugural volume of the Global Narrative Initiative, a student-led archive devoted to recovering them.

Across Washington, D.C., Hong Kong, Nanjing, Farmington, Shanghai, San Francisco, Pottstown, Vancouver, and Singapore, researchers spent months listening before writing. They followed voices often left at the margins: community historians, immigrant families, women business owners, Baiju performers, election workers, dengue survivors, and others whose lives cannot be contained by a single description.

This book is not a history of places. It is a record of people, and the beginning of a commitment to keep listening where history grows quiet.
